ABU DHABI, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) – The General Assembly of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ended Saturday after electing a new president and governing board.
Brazil’s Andrew Parsons became the new IPC President. Zhang Haidi, Chairwoman of the China Federation for the Disabled Persons (CFDP), ranked the second in the voting.
China’s been actively promoting the international Paralympic Movement. Zhang’s first-ever contending for the IPC presidency means China is willing and capable to shoulder more duties in further pushing forward the Paralympic Movement, said Wei Jizhong, Lifetime Honorary Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia.
CFDP Secretary-General Zhao Sujing said Zhang’s running for the presidency was supported by many National Paralympic Committees.
“We showed China’s image as a responsible nation and expanded our international influence while vying for the presidency. China will continue to commit actively to the international Paralympic Movement,” she added.
