BEIJING, Sept. 2 (China News Service) – Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said Friday China is making a perfect preparation for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
While attending a press conference in Beijing on the 2017 Chengdu marathon, Samaranch Jr. said he witnessed the success of the 2008 Olympic Games, and believed the 2022 Games will be another great success.
China has made great achievements at successive Olympic Games since 1984. Its winter sports industry has developed surprisingly rapidly since Beijing was awarded the 2022 Games. China is expected to be a balanced power in both summer and winter sports, he said.
He recalled his late father’s lasting friendship with China.
Samaranch Sr. served as the seventh President of the IOC from 1980 to 2001. During his 21-year presidency he paid close attention to the IOC’s relationship with China.
“One of his lifetime achievements was to push forward the Olympic Movement in China. At Los Angeles 1984, he placed the gold medal around the neck of Xu Haifeng, who won China’s first Olympic gold in history. My father had been actively engaged in the progress of Chinese sports since that victory ceremony,” said Samaranch Jr.
Samaranch Sr. donated 10,000 US dollars to help Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China, organise the city’s first marathon in 1986.
“My father attached great importance to the development of Chinese sports. His donation to the 1986 Chengdu marathon was an episode showing his love for China,” he added.
