BEIJING, June 18, 2017 (Xinhua) – About 20,000 people in nine Chinese cities – Beijing, Tianjin, Zhangjiakou, Baotou, Chengde, Haiyang, Jiujiang, Shuozhou and Xining -- on Sunday kicked off a week-long national celebration for the Olympic Day.
Speaking to a joyful crowd of 2,000 people in the Olympic Sports Centre in Beijing, Zhao Yong, vice minister of the General Administration of Sport, read a congratulatory message sent by the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.
China began to celebrate the Olympic Day every year in 1987. The Chinese Olympic Committee has always attached great importance to the Olympic Day’s role in promoting the Olympic spirit and driving the Olympic Movement forward, said Zhao.
The IOC was founded on June 23, 1894. In honour of this historic moment the IOC decided to set June 23 as the Olympic Day.
