SAPPORO, Japan, February 22, 2017 (Xinhua) – The Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (Beijing 2022) said Wednesday it did a successful fact-finding mission at the 8th Asian Winter Games.
Beijing 2022 sent six “observers” to Sapporo to learn local organizers’ handling with human resources, technical support, venue planning, construction and sustainability, and media operations.
“The Sapporo Organising Committee has a very compact structure. For instance, the Function Area serving 32 NOCs only has five staffers. But it functioned in high efficiency throughout the Games,” said Wang Yanxia, deputy director of Beijing 2022’s Sports Department.
This was the third time Sapporo had hosted the Asian Winter Games. It was also the host city of the 1972 winter Olympics.
“Winter sports are very popular in Sapporo. The city has rich winter sports talents. The organising committee received strong support from local sports organizations when recruiting volunteers. Many of the volunteers are retired people,” said Wang.
When allocating Games-time positions, the organising committee often took into account of the volunteers’ favorite sports to protect their enthusiam, she added.
After Sapporo, Beijing 2022 will send more officials to observe PyeongChang 2018’s cluster Test Events, the bobsleigh world championships and the Alpine ski world championships, she said.
“We not only need high-level competition managers, but also talents in venue planning, technical support and venue operations,” she said.
“Recruiting talents is an important component of Beijing 2022’s preparations. Good human resources save costs. We learned a lot from Sapporo,” said Wang Guoqing, with Beijing 2022’s Human Resources Department.
“We’ll recruit talents from all walks of life,” he added.
